How should file transfers/searches be shown in SoulseekQt?

In a table, the way it was done in the original Soulseek client.

In a tree, the way it's currently done in SoulseekQt.

The top feature request that has not yet been addressed is the ability to reorder the columns in the transfers and search results views, which seems to imply that a lot of you would like to go back to the way these were displayed in the original Soulseek client. One arrangement I'm considering is a table where repeating information in a given column is only shown the first time, so for example a series of transfers from the same user will only show the username on the first row, and the folder name on the first row of each set of files from the same folder. The tradeoff is that it won't be possible to show the overall progress for each folder and user, as those all appear on the same row.

I'm not getting this crash. Can you post a crash report?

for some reason I can't vote.

Sorry about that, apparently the default for the Drupal poll module is not to let anyone vote. Should hopefully work now.

By the way, I'm wondering if there's a difference in search results when you use different versions. I still have version 157 and sticking with it for now, and hoping that it doesn't show only results from users with the same version. Any feedback is appreciated.

Nir, why not to create classic table view and put a ticker in UI options to enable\disable it?

by the way, it makes me wonder, why is it so hard to allow user re-arrange order of categories in tree view... it would open and collapse on first and second category (as now), but we'd decide what is next (file, progress, status etc). please implement this.

I'd rather have one single view than two separate ones, the non-default of which most users don't even know about. Two views are difficult to maintain, as I've discovered since implementing old-style search results. The logic for actually arranging all the information in a tree where every column can be a category index is quite complicated, but what I'm describing above is very similar -- it would be a table where identical information in the same column won't repeat, so it would have a tree-like appearance. You'd be able to move the columns around and change the sorting so you should be able to do anything you want.

perhaps experimental build with table view so we can play around with it? (or image) i have to admit i have a problem imagining how it would look like, what is the functionality. in table like view - could i collapse 10track download into one line as i can now? that's essential for me, especially for inactive transfers (one way or the other, auto collapse is also an idea to think about)

On second reading, I see you mean that all the columns but the user and folder should be movable. That should be doable, but I'm curious to see what everyone thinks about all this for now.

I think that the general feature implemented here is further customization: let the user decide what he wants and give him the ability to configure the application to suit his needs. I support any feature that increases customization in any application.

The choices listed in the poll, the way they are phrased, don't explicitly describe which option would allow more customization (I don't remember if the 'old way' was more so or not)

Tree is more practical. I wanted to report a BUG, is the status of the birds AFK users do not close their wings.

psynaturecybine's picture

confirmed

I definitely prefer the tree. It didn't take too long to get used to.

This new tree system is awesome once you get used to it

cum on!

omg old soulseek style all the way

soulseek the way it is now is brilliant
great in peak hours on my connection
fast downloads kinda bypasses throttling isp

Peace yo!

More interested in getting 'download folder as' on the right-click menu when searching, personally - so you don't have to go back renaming stuff after you've downloaded it. Latest linux build is october 2013, mind... :S

(I sound like such an ingrate. :) Thanks for all the work, nir!)

I prepared a couple of Linux build a few months ago and never got around to properly testing them, let me know if one of these works for you. If not, I can try preparing another build as soon as I get the time:

32-bit (I think): https://www.dropbox.com/s/sdpdwob2rfww0mv/SoulseekQt-2014-5-4.tgz?dl=0
64-bit: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kge1rcgcbs8hmgw/SoulseekQt-2014-5-4-64bit.tar....

Thanks, Nir

Nice one, thanks! I shall give that a go at... some point. I see the very feature I'm requesting above has been part of Qt since the 2013-11-6 build as well, doh... :S

I MUCH prefer the original Soulseek which I began using in 2002. I miss it.. the search results in particular, but the overall layout was preferable for me. I didn't understand what the QT upgrade was for. I think if we could have a hybrid of both versions, combining the best features that would be great.

I like to be able to sort my search results by the different columns depending on what information is important to me. It would be awesome if we could also filter search results for specific terms or filter out terms by adding a minus sign in front.

I also used to be a regular in the chat rooms, and would hang out with friends daily there for years, until the new build. Now the rooms I used to go to each morning are dead and no one really speaks much any more. I can't help but feel that the new design changed things and kinda killed off some of the communities. But perhaps other groups haven't had any problem?
Big thanks anyway for all the years of a great program. It's still the number one place to find all sorts of rare and random music from all around the world. =)

nir, please set old search style as default

I'm not sure if setting it as the default is the answer. It's clear from this poll that people's preference toward one style or the other is split pretty evenly. However I do think that seeing as so many users do prefer the old style, it should be made much more apparent that the option exists for old style search results, as I suspect most are not aware of it. Perhaps a dialog when the user first runs the client that gives them the choice?

Also, do users who prefer old style search results feel as empathically about old style transfers? That's certainly something I can do.

Ok, so I've had a very industrious weekend and got the client to the point where you can now configure the transfers view to display as a list instead of a tree, a-la the original Soulseek client. This is in addition to being able to do the same for search results, which has been a SoulseekQt option for a long time now. You should now also be able to move the columns around in both transfers and search results, and the new column positions will be saved between sessions. Lots changed under the hood so problems are likely with both tree and list display styles. Let me know how it works for you!

Nir,
This new build (2014.9.21) leaves 2 untranslated strings in the UI Tab. Maybe you can add new language files in the our dropbox. Thanks
Peter Leijsten

Thanks for the heads up! I put the updated language files in Dropbox.

This new Windows version has crashed three times within a few minutes of loading after random right clicks in the transfers window.

Can you see if there's any specific action or actions that are causing these crashes?

I was just opening users in the transfers window to see what they were downloading. I was still using the tree format.

Are you just expanding user nodes? What are you right-clicking on?

Just expanding the user nodes to see what was downloading and then deleting the files from the list. Right clicking to send a message, browse or add to the userlist. All three crashes occurred within a few minutes in the transfers window. These types of crashes have happened in the past in previous versions probably due to memory issues, but not this soon after starting the program.

I'm not able to reproduce any of the right-click related crashes so far, but there's definitely a crash bug there when removing uploads or downloads. This build should at least fix that:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/8di8cft3q5hh1f3/SoulseekQt-2014-9-25.exe?dl=0

If the other crashes still persist, I also want to downgrade back to Qt 5.3.1 and see if that makes any difference for you. The last build I posted is the first one to use Qt 5.3.2, and I've noticed some slightly weird behavior since, albeit in a different area of the client.

Thanks, Nir

testing SoulseekQt-2014-9-25.exe in Windows Technical Preview (aka Windows 10) and is working fine ;)

The new build is working well so far. No additional crashes yet.

could You please post an updated link to a linux build? i already put a request on db\builds

I'm holding off on adding these to the download page until they're better tested, but here we go for now:

64bit: https://www.dropbox.com/s/j26a3s02fh1qxao/SoulseekQt-2014-9-25-64bit.tgz...
32bit: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8txphnoatmgym99/SoulseekQt-2014-9-25.tgz?dl=0

psynaturecybine's picture

tested. it's okay (xubuntu 2014-9-25 32bit) beside - cannot be minimized other way than clicking "_" icon on the apps titlebar, and there is no tray icon.

In a table, the way it was done in the original Soulseek client.

psynaturecybine's picture

when i collapse folder (user still expanded) in transfers>downloads, why "size" and "queue" is empty? queue should indicate first file number, and size should show total size of the folder thats downloading. please consider fixing this. isn't it good moment to do it? eventually those categories should also be filled when user is collapsed.

Just like to say thanks for making this an option and NOT removing the tree view IMO tree view is much nicer (and easier to use) than old style :D

Thanks from Canada, y'all /// that's it; hope you're cozy there!
