Get Place In Line / Open Ports benefits

Hello,

You can find this as a reply here http://www.slsknet.org/news/node/602 however after no answer i decided to re-post it as a new topic

I recently installed SoulseekQT, for some reason it will sometimes get the place in line upon downloading a file with a number under the "Free" column in the search results (I assume this is the queue count for that user), other times it won't get a place in line at all. I usually leave Soulseek running all the time, or at least over night, and if it does not get the place in line at the beginning, it does not get it at all. Also if a user I am downloading from goes offline, when they come back on, I won't get a update of my queue status. This is a very handy feature I always used back in the days I used Soulseek a few years ago, is there anything I can do to get it working?

On a note, I am on a cable modem connection with a "shared" IP address, therefore I do not have access to open ports on my router, could this be attributing to the problem?

Version: SoulseekQt-8-5-2012

Lastly, i would like to find out what the benefits of donating are, I am just waiting for my international credit card and will donate. Are Queue times shorter?

As long as there are no files actively downloading from a user, the client will request place in line information for files queued with that user about every ten minutes. You should see "Requesting place in line for download of...." messages under Diagnostics->Logs->Transfer Queue appearing every once in a while. If these message are appearing but you're still not getting place in line information, it may signify a connectivity issue with that particular user. Certain older versions of Soulseek NS do appear to exhibit a problem of reforming peer connections to other users. Unfortunately nothing can be done about that. Not being able to accept connections may contribute to this problem.

SoulseekQt definitely should re-queue downloads from a user as soon as they go back online. I really can't say what might be going on there.

There are two perks that come with donating, while your privileges time lasts. The first is that your files will be queued ahead of other non-privileged users who aren't on the uploader's user list. The other is that your manual searches (not wishlist searches) will be delivered by the Soulseek server directly to every user instead of sending it through the distributed network, which gives you full coverage and a faster return of search results.

Cheers, Nir

Thanks for the information, I will soon be getting another model modem from my cable company with which I will be able to open ports, hopefully the place in line feature will work then and accepting connections also.

Also, to update the client, should I just install the updated version over the old one?

Yes, that should work fine. Good luck with the new modem!

Thanks!
